Koh Samui is 'the island of the coconut tree'. It's the third largest island in Thailand. Area is: 248 square kilometres. Located 560 kilometres south of Bangkok. The most famous beaches are Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Big Buddha and Maenam. Samui has many sister islands. Well known are Koh Tao (one of the best diving islands in Asia) and Koh Phangan.
Koh Samui has been a backpackers destination since the late 70's. Today, tourists from all over the world come to this 'easygoing' paradise. It's located in the Gulf of Siam and surrounded by over sixty other islands, some small and inhabited, some bigger; Koh Phangan, Koh Tao (divers island) and Ang Tong Islands, National marine park.
